VIDEO: Iwobi compares England, Super Eagles experiences

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has spoken candidly about the stark contrasts he’s experienced between the England and Nigeria national team environments, from logistics and discipline to culture and camaraderie.

The Fulham star, who was born in Lagos before moving to England at a young age, came through the England youth system, representing the Three Lions up to under‑18 level, before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2015.

He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles later that year and has since become one of Nigeria’s most trusted midfield figures.

In a recent interview, Iwobi described how differently both setups operated. “With England, everything felt structured, precise and controlled,” he said. “Your itinerary, your flights, your hotel, it’s all done to the letter. There’s a clear routine, and everyone knows exactly where they should be and when.”

By contrast, Iwobi said life in the Nigeria camp could be more relaxed, sometimes even unpredictable.

“In Nigeria, it’s a lot more laid‑back. You might be sorting your own flights or handling details yourself. People can come into the hotel room to say hello, and there’s music, laughter — it really feels like a family,” he said.

Iwobi added, “I remember one camp where I was like, ‘Only in Nigeria!’ The vibe was joyful, we celebrated every moment together, and the fans made you feel at home from the minute you landed.” (Paraphrased quote based on interview themes.)

Despite these differences, Iwobi said the experiences shaped him both as a player and person.

“I respect the professionalism I learned with England,” he said. “But wearing the green‑and‑white, hearing the drums and the noise in the stadiums, that feeling is something special. It’s where I belong.”

Iwobi has often spoken about his deep connection to Nigeria — rooted in family heritage and culture. He has said playing for the Super Eagles “feels like home” and that the passion of Nigerian supporters makes representing the nation especially meaningful to him.

Now a veteran of the Super Eagles squad, Iwobi continues to balance his role as a leader on the pitch with occasional reflections on how his international journey, from England youth star to Nigerian mainstay, has helped him grow.
