Toulouse booked their place in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France after edging Marseille 4-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Orange Vélodrome. Nice also advanced via a shootout, overcoming Lorient.
The game got off to a dramatic start when Marseille were awarded a penalty inside the opening minute after Rasmus Nicolaisen fouled Mason Greenwood in the box.
Greenwood calmly converted, sending Kjetil Haug the wrong way for his sixth goal of the tournament.
Toulouse responded quickly. Yann Gboho’s initial header narrowly went over, but moments later he found the equaliser.
Charlie Cresswell’s header from a corner was parried by Geronimo Rulli, only to fall kindly to Gboho, who tapped home effortlessly.
Marseille nearly regained the lead before half-time with two stunning long-range efforts.
Arthur Vermeeren rattled the crossbar with a first-time strike, while Himad Abdelli saw his shot brilliantly tipped over by Haug.
The second half saw Toulouse almost snatch the advantage, with Rulli producing a double save, first denying Emersonn and then parrying Nicolaisen’s header from the resulting corner.
Despite that, Marseille managed to edge back in front, thanks to a slice of fortune. Geoffrey Kondogbia’s pass found Igor Paixao, whose cross somehow eluded everyone and deflected in off the far post.
Undeterred, Toulouse equalised again from a set-piece. Aron Donnum’s dangerous delivery found Cresswell, who powered a header into the net, making it 2-2.
As the match drew to a close, Toulouse appeared happy to settle for penalties. Greenwood led Marseille’s late charge but fired wide on a couple of occasions, sending the game to a shootout.
Toulouse started confidently with Donnum converting the first penalty, Greenwood equalised, and Gboho put the visitors ahead again.
Aubameyang kept Marseille level, but misses from Leonardo Balerdi and Cristian Casseres Jr. swung the advantage to Toulouse.
Nayef Aguerd scored on a retaken penalty, and Pape Demba Diop kept his composure to maintain the pressure.
Ethan Nwaneri’s final attempt went over, sealing a famous victory for Toulouse, who reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2015/16.
