Serie A: Debutant Santos rescues point for Napoli against Roma

Napoli maintained their unbeaten home run in Serie A after a dramatic 2-2 draw with AS Roma on Sunday, with debutant Alisson Santos netting a crucial late equaliser.

The Brazilian defender, making his first league appearance since joining from Sporting, rifled home a powerful strike eight minutes from time, ensuring the Serie A champions stayed third in the standings and kept a three-point cushion over fourth-placed Roma.

Roma appeared set to claim a landmark victory at Napoli, with new signing Donyell Malen continuing his fine form.

The Dutch striker, on loan from Aston Villa, opened the scoring in the seventh minute and converted a 71st-minute penalty, taking his Serie A tally to five goals in five appearances.

Napoli responded through Leonardo Spinazzola, who capitalised on a deflection to loop the ball over goalkeeper Mile Svilar in the 40th minute.

Santos then completed the comeback for the hosts, firing home late to secure a share of the spoils.

Roma’s first goal stemmed from a defensive lapse by Evan Ndicka, whose tackle sparked a quick break. Bryan Zaragoza surged down the right flank and delivered a precise cross for Malen to finish.

The second half saw Spinazzola test Roma’s keeper early, with his shot saved, before Roma regained the lead via a penalty after Amir Rrahmani fouled Wesley in the box.

Malen converted, only for Santos’ late strike to deny Roma their first away win at Napoli in eight years.

With the draw, Napoli sit on 50 points, 11 adrift of leaders Inter Milan, while Roma remain within striking distance in the fourth spot.
