Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido came under online criticism after mistakenly directing harsh comments at gospel singer Tosin Bee during an emotional reaction to his ongoing child custody dispute.
The incident followed Davido’s appearance at the Lagos State High Court on Thursday in a case involving his estranged partner, Sophia Momodu, mother of his daughter Imade.
After the court session, the singer took to social media to vent frustration at a lawyer he accused of provoking him during proceedings.
“I disgraced you in the courtroom. I was teaching you your work and you couldn’t even take it,” Davido wrote in a now-viral post. “You went on to mention my son. You are a wicked human being the worst lawyer ever.”
Shortly afterwards, Davido reposted a photograph of Tosin Bee, apparently confusing the gospel artiste with the lawyer, and made remarks that triggered backlash from fans who flooded the singer’s page.
Tosin Bee quickly issued a calm public response, distancing himself from the situation.
“Hello Mr David, I don’t know anything about the post you made,” he wrote. “My mum passed away eight years ago, so I believe this is a case of mistaken identity. I’m sorry you had to go through this, and my prayers are with you.”
His clarification shifted public sentiment, with many social media users calling on Davido to apologise for the mix-up, while others noted that the controversy had unintentionally boosted the gospel singer’s visibility.
Later on Friday, Davido posted on X that he intended to withdraw the case, explaining that he had only sought joint custody rather than full custody of his daughter.
He also expressed hurt over references made in court to his late son.
“My daughter will grow up knowing I fought for her,” he wrote. “Let’s move on. One love.”
The singer has not yet publicly addressed the mistaken repost involving Tosin Bee, but online discussions about the incident continue to trend.
