The Cross River State Police Command has recovered eight bodies from a mortuary facility in Isong Inyang community, located in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.
Police spokesperson Eitokpah Sunday disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, explaining that officers acted on credible intelligence about the presence of corpses at an embalmment hall along the Calabar–Ikom highway.
“At about 11:56 a.m. on February 13, 2026, the Command received reliable information regarding bodies at the facility. Operatives were immediately deployed to verify the report,” he said.
“On arrival, eight dried corpses were discovered at the location.”
The police said swift action led to the arrest of a suspect identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, who is believed to be employed as a mortician with Enghaut Company Mortuary.
According to the Command, the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery and whether any laws were violated.
“A comprehensive investigation is ongoing to establish the facts of the case and determine if any offences have been committed,” the police spokesperson added.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring that updates would be provided as investigations progress.
