Puerto Rican superstar, Bad Bunny, made history at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the first artist to win Album of the Year for a fully Spanish-language album with Debí Tirar Más Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Photos).
During his emotional acceptance speech in Spanish, he also addressed audiences in English, dedicating the award “to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country to follow their dreams.”
Earlier in the ceremony, Bad Bunny also claimed Best Música Urbana Album and used his platform to make a political statement, declaring “ICE out” to prolonged applause.
He continued, “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans. Sometimes hate grows with more hate. The only thing more powerful than hate is love. So if we fight, we fight with love. We love our people. We love our family.”
Like Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, who won Song of the Year for Wildflower, spoke out against ICE while accepting her award, telling the audience, “no one is illegal on stolen land,” and concluding with a censored expletive aimed at the agency.
Kendrick Lamar, last year’s Super Bowl halftime performer, further cemented his record as the most awarded rapper in Grammy history, winning Best Rap Album for GNX and Record of the Year alongside SZA for luther. His pre-show victories brought his total Grammy count past Jay-Z’s.
Filmmaker Steven Spielberg also joined the exclusive EGOT club, earning a Grammy for Best Music Film for the documentary Music by John Williams, co-produced with Ron Howard and others.
The show featured memorable performances from Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and all eight nominees for Best New Artist, including Olivia Dean, who emerged as the winner.
