The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that some officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces are under investigation for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government, following the conclusion of a comprehensive internal probe.
The military authorities disclosed on Monday that investigations into the arrest of 16 officers for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations have been completed, with the findings forwarded to the appropriate superior authority.
The officers, who were arrested in October 2025, range in rank from Captain to Brigadier General. At the time, reports by online platform Sahara Reporters had alleged that the officers were detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency over claims of secret meetings aimed at toppling the government.
However, the Defence Headquarters initially dismissed the reports, describing the matter as a routine internal disciplinary issue and warning against speculation capable of causing public anxiety.
Providing an update, the newly appointed Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the investigation was conducted in line with established military procedures and standards.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” Uba said.
According to him, the investigative panel carefully examined the conduct of the affected personnel and established that some of the officers have cases to answer.
“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he stated.
Uba added that officers indicted in the report would be formally arraigned before relevant military judicial panels in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
“Those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial. This process ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process,” he said.
He emphasised that the actions being taken were purely disciplinary and part of the military’s institutional mechanisms to maintain order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” Uba added.
The military reassured Nigerians of its commitment to safeguarding democracy and maintaining stability in the country.
