Lyon edge Young Boys 1-0, book Europa League Round of 16 spot

Olympique Lyonnais maintained their perfect momentum in the UEFA Europa League, extending their winning streak across all competitions to seven with a gritty 1-0 away victory over Young Boys, a result that sealed their place in the Round of 16 and kept them top of the standings.

The contest pitched two teams in contrasting form against each other. Young Boys arrived off the back of three straight defeats, while Lyon had surged through eight wins in their previous nine matches.

Despite that disparity, the Swiss side started the brighter of the two, probing early without truly testing Lyon until Alvyn Sanches thundered a strike off the crossbar midway through the first half.

That moment served as a wake-up call for the visitors, who gradually wrestled back control of possession.

Lyon’s clearest opening before the break fell to Afonso Moreira, whose driving run from outside the box ended with a shot smartly kept out by Marvin Keller.

Lyon’s growing pressure finally told in stoppage time. A lapse at the back allowed Ainsley Maitland-Miles to react quickest inside the area, smashing a loose ball into the top corner to hand the French side a crucial lead heading into the interval.

Young Boys pushed hard for a response after the restart and thought they had drawn level just past the hour mark when Sanches finished clinically after breaking through the defence.

However, a prolonged VAR check ruled the goal out for a marginal offside, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

Alerted once more, Lyon tightened up defensively and absorbed sustained pressure as Young Boys committed numbers forward in search of an equaliser.

The hosts were left exposed on the counter, but Lyon showed little urgency to add to their tally, protecting their narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The victory marked a sixth Europa League win of the campaign for Paulo Fonseca’s side, confirming qualification for the Round of 16 with a match to spare.

Young Boys, meanwhile, may need at least a point away to Stuttgart next Thursday to keep their European hopes alive.
