The African Union has announced that its Executive Council will convene for its 48th Ordinary Session in February 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to deliberate on key governance, policy and institutional issues affecting the continent.
According to a statement published on the African Union’s official website on Wednesday, the meeting will bring together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other designated ministers from AU member states.
“The Forty-Eighth Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union will take place in February 2026,” the statement said, describing the council as “one of the Union’s principal policy organs.”
The AU explained that the Executive Council plays a critical role in coordinating and adopting policies in areas of common interest to member states, while also preparing matters for consideration by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
“It is responsible for coordinating and taking decisions on policies in areas of common interest to Member States, in line with the objectives of Agenda 2063,” the Union stated.
The two-day session is scheduled to hold on February 11 and 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (East Africa Time) at the Mandela Conference Hall, located at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The Union outlined several agenda items for the meeting, including deliberations on Africa’s engagement with the G20, elections and appointments into AU organs and institutions, and a review of progress on the Skills Audit and Competency Assessment process.
“During the session, the Executive Council will consider the report of the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee, conduct elections and appointments, review institutional governance matters, and consider draft legal instruments,” the statement added.
The African Union also invited members of the media to cover the ceremonial aspects of the meeting, particularly the opening and closing sessions.
“Journalists are invited to cover the official opening and closing ceremonies of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council on 11 and 12 February 2026,” the AU announced.
It further assured that details on livestreaming and other media engagement opportunities would be communicated ahead of the event.
“Further information on media coverage, including press conferences and interview opportunities, will be shared in due course through official African Union communication channels,” the statement noted.
The upcoming session is expected to influence policy direction and institutional reforms within the African Union, as the continent continues to pursue its long-term development goals under Agenda 2063.
