Why Super Eagles skipped AFCON medal ceremony – NFF

Nigeria Football Federation president, Ibrahim Gusau, has addressed the absence of Super Eagles players from the medal ceremony at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles claimed a record-extending ninth bronze medal after defeating Egypt’s Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties, following a goalless 90 minutes.

However, the Nigerian players were not present to collect their medals after Sunday’s final between hosts Morocco and Senegal.

Speaking on the matter, Gusau explained that the players were compelled to leave due to club commitments, which required their immediate return after the match against Egypt.

“The players could not wait to receive their medals on Sunday. Their clubs were already after them to come back after Saturday’s game,” Gusau said, as reported on X by UK-based journalist Osasu Obayiuwana (via All Africa).

He further noted that the situation was not unique to Nigeria, pointing out that Egypt faced similar challenges.

“I have the medals in my possession. And this is the case for Egypt too, not just us. Had the medal ceremony taken place on the day of the match, they would have had the medals,” Gusau added.
