S’Eagles’ Adams marks Sevilla return with late brace after AFCON exploits

Super Eagles striker Akor Adams made an immediate impact on his return to La Liga action, scoring two late goals to help Sevilla FC secure a dramatic 2–2 draw against Elche CF on Monday night.

The Nigerian forward, who had returned from international duty less than two days earlier, was introduced at the start of the second half and went on to change the course of the match at the Manuel Martínez Valero Stadium.

Sevilla, struggling for attacking rhythm and hovering near the relegation zone, trailed for much of the encounter before Adams’ intervention reignited their hopes.

The 24-year-old pulled one back in the 75th minute, showing calm finishing as he beat Elche goalkeeper Iñaki Peña to reduce the deficit.

As the home side attempted to protect their lead deep into stoppage time, Sevilla were awarded a penalty.

Adams stepped forward and converted confidently, firing his spot-kick high into the net to complete his brace and rescue a vital point for the visitors.

Speaking after the match, Adams described the result as a reflection of Sevilla’s fighting spirit.
“I am happy to help the team, especially in a difficult moment,” he said.

“We kept believing until the end, and I was ready when the chance came.”

The goals took Adams’ league tally to five goals and two assists in 15 La Liga appearances this season, underlining his growing influence since joining the Spanish side.

Sevilla head coach praised the striker’s composure and mentality, noting that his performance came shortly after an intense Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

“Akor showed personality and hunger,” the coach said. “Coming off the bench after international duty is never easy, but he gave us energy and belief.”

Adams recently featured prominently for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he recorded two goals and two assists as the Super Eagles finished third at the tournament.

For Sevilla, the draw could prove significant as they continue their push to steer clear of relegation trouble.

Beyond the result, Adams’ impact offered renewed optimism that the club now has a forward capable of delivering in decisive moments.

“A striker like this can change games,” the Sevilla coach added.

“That is very important for us at this stage of the season.”
