Police warn motorists after hit-and-run leaves three officers injured in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has issued a strong warning to motorists, declaring that attacks on officers carrying out lawful duties will not be tolerated.

The warning followed a hit-and-run incident in Benin City, where a driver rammed into police personnel at a checkpoint, leaving three officers injured.

In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said road users must comply with security checks and avoid reckless driving.

“The command strongly advises all motorists to slow down and cooperate with officers on duty. There is no acceptable reason for any driver to rush through a checkpoint except to evade lawful checks or endanger lives,” Ikoedem stated.

The incident reportedly occurred at Iyekogba Estate Gate, where the suspect allegedly drove against traffic, broke through a barricade, made a U-turn and accelerated towards the officers.

The driver later collided with several vehicles before he was apprehended.

Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Nsikak Okon, who was described as an unlicensed driver.

According to the police, a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued at about ₦28 million, was recovered from him, alongside substances suspected to be illegal drugs.

“The vehicle was found to be unregistered, and preliminary findings show the suspect is not licensed to drive,” the PPRO added.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, said the command would deal decisively with anyone who deliberately targets security personnel.

“Any person who attempts to harm police officers in the course of their lawful duty will be dealt with according to the law. Enough is enough,” Agbonika warned.

The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention, while investigations into the case are ongoing.
