Court halts Rivers Assembly impeachment move against Fubara

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an interim injunction stopping the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and 25 others from taking any further steps toward the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The order, issued by the court in Oyibo Local Government Area, also affects the Clerk of the House and the Chief Judge of Rivers State. Specifically, the court barred the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, from receiving, forwarding, considering or acting on any request, resolution, articles of impeachment or related communication from the first to the twenty-seventh defendants for the purpose of setting up a panel to probe the alleged misconduct of the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.

Justice F. A. Fiberesima gave the ruling while hearing motions ex parte in two separate suits filed by Governor Fubara and the Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Nma-Ordu.

The judge also granted permission to the claimants to serve the interim injunction, the originating processes and all subsequent court documents meant for the first to the thirty-first defendants by pasting them at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters.

In addition, the court directed that the interim order and other originating processes be served on the thirty-second defendant, the Chief Judge of the state, through any judicial staff at his chambers within the High Court premises.

Justice Fiberesima subsequently adjourned the matter until January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion.
