Cameroon produced a composed and efficient display to end South Africa’s AFCON 2025 campaign, booking a place in the quarterfinals and setting up a mouth-watering clash with hosts Morocco.
Fast and physical opening exchanges
The Round of 16 encounter burst into life from the first whistle as both sides matched intensity with physicality.
South Africa sought early control through crosses and set-piece deliveries, while Cameroon looked dangerous on the break, using speed and strength to stretch the Bafana Bafana defence.
Momentum swung back and forth in an evenly contested opening period, with neither team willing to concede ground.
Tchamadeu strikes before the break
Cameroon’s pressure paid off four minutes before halftime. Junior Tchamadeu finished off a slick attacking move, slicing through South Africa’s back line to hand the Indomitable Lions a 1–0 lead at the interval.
South Africa pushed for an immediate response, with Oswin Appollis forcing a save, but their efforts lacked the cutting edge needed to restore parity.
The Lions wasted no time after the restart. Nine minutes into the second half, Christian Kofane doubled Cameroon’s advantage, delivering a crucial blow that tilted the match firmly in their favour.
From there, Cameroon dictated the rhythm, closing down space and patiently waiting for counter-attacking opportunities as South Africa struggled to regain momentum.
A late surge from Bafana Bafana injected tension into the contest. In the 88th minute, Evidence Maggopa met Aubrey Modiba’s long delivery to pull one back and make it 2–1.
Despite the late drama, Cameroon remained disciplined and resolute, seeing out the final minutes to seal victory.
Clinical in attack and assured in defence, Cameroon completed a statement performance to progress to the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals.
They now turn their attention to a heavyweight showdown against host nation Morocco, while South Africa exit the tournament after a spirited but ultimately insufficient display.
