AFCON: Super Eagle face Uganda, target perfect record

Nigeria step into their final Group C fixture on Tuesday with nothing left to prove in terms of qualification, but plenty still at stake in shaping momentum ahead of the knockout rounds when they face Uganda at the Fez Stadium.

Already guaranteed top spot after back-to-back victories, the Super Eagles hold a three-point cushion at the summit, while Uganda prop up the table with one point, trailing Tanzania on goal difference and needing a result to keep slim qualification hopes alive.

Match preview
Comfort has never really been Nigeria’s style, and their AFCON campaign has followed a familiar script. What looked like a routine outing against Tunisia quickly turned tense, as the Super Eagles nearly squandered a three-goal advantage before clinging on for a dramatic 3–2 win.

Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman put Eric Chelle’s side firmly in control, but late strikes from Monastir Talbi and Ali Al-Abdi exposed Nigeria’s defensive fragility and set up a nervy finale.

Tunisia came agonisingly close to completing a remarkable comeback in stoppage time.

That result mirrored Nigeria’s broader trend, potent going forward, vulnerable at the back.

The Super Eagles have now both scored and conceded in seven of their last eight matches, including their 2–1 opening win over Tanzania.

Still, results have largely gone Nigeria’s way. They have won seven of their last 10 games across all competitions, while their AFCON group-stage record now stands at seven wins from the last nine matches.

Qualification for a 16th straight knockout phase appearance was sealed with a game to spare.

Despite already locking up first place in Group C, the three-time champions are unlikely to ease off completely.

A convincing performance would further underline their title credentials as they continue the long wait for a first AFCON crown since 2013, following heartbreak in the final of the previous edition.

For Uganda, the situation is far more precarious. After opening their campaign with a 3–1 loss to Tunisia, the Cranes picked up their first point in a 1–1 draw against Tanzania, though it felt like an opportunity missed after Allan Okello failed to convert a stoppage-time penalty.

Paul Put’s men now have just one win in their last 10 AFCON matches and face the prospect of a fifth group-stage exit in eight tournament appearances.

Victory on Tuesday is crucial, with a place among the best third-placed teams still mathematically possible.

Uganda may draw confidence from a relatively balanced head-to-head record, having won four of the previous eight meetings with Nigeria, while losing only twice.

Team news
Uganda reported no new injury concerns after the draw with Tanzania, giving Put a full squad to select from. Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango, who replaced Jamal Salim last time out, could retain his place between the posts.

Striker Uche Ikpeazu, who has Nigerian heritage, is pushing for a starting role after scoring off the bench on matchday two.

Nigeria, meanwhile, could rotate with qualification secured. Chelle made tweaks in the previous game, bringing in Bruno Onyemaechi and Frank Onyeka, and both could feature again.

Osimhen is now off the mark in the tournament, Ndidi has his first international goal, and Lookman has scored in consecutive AFCON matches.

Players such as Chidera Ejuke, Moses Simon and Paul Onuachu may also be given opportunities as the coach manages workloads ahead of the knockout phase.
Possible lineups
Uganda:
Onyango; Kayondo, Sibbick, Byaruhanga, Obita; Semakula, Mutyaba, Okello; Omedi, Mato, Ssemugabi
Nigeria:
Nwabali; Onyemaechi, Bassey, Ajayi, Osayi-Samuel; Ndidi, Iwobi, Onyeka, Lookman; Osimhen, Adams

Verdict
Nigeria’s attacking firepower and defensive lapses suggest another open contest could unfold. Uganda’s urgency may keep the game competitive, but even with potential rotation, the Super Eagles are still expected to have enough quality to narrowly come out on top.
