Newcastle United booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from teenager Lewis Miley, who headed home late on to secure a 2-1 victory over Fulham.
The 19-year-old, deployed out of posiation at right-back because of Eddie Howe’s injury-hit squad, proved decisive in the 92nd minute by meeting Sandro Tonali’s corner and extending Newcastle’s remarkable run to nine consecutive wins in the competition.
There was clear tension inside St James’ Park following last weekend’s bruising derby loss to Sunderland, but it briefly eased when Yoane Wissa opened his Newcastle account just 10 minutes into his first start, finishing from close range.
Fulham, however, responded swiftly. Six minutes later, Sasa Lukic drew the visitors level, rising unchallenged in the area to head in Antonee Robinson’s cross and restore the nerves among the home support.
As the match drifted towards penalties, Fulham substitute goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte pulled off an excellent save to deny Miley deep into stoppage time.
Moments later, though, the academy product had the final say, glancing a header from the resulting corner to send the holders through to the last four.1
