Adeleke imposes 24-hour curfew on Osun community

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Igbajo, Boluwaduro Local Government Area, following violent disturbances that erupted over the weekend.

The unrest, which began on Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday, is reportedly linked to tensions following the death of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, who passed away last week after a brief illness.

In a statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, Governor Adeleke ordered an immediate lockdown of Igbajo, directing security agencies to maintain round-the-clock surveillance until peace is fully restored.

Speaking on the situation, the governor said, “It is with deep shock and dismay that I received the sad news of the breakdown of law and order in Igbajo. My administration will not allow any breach of peace to continue unchecked. Anyone found instigating or participating in acts capable of worsening the crisis will face the full weight of the law.”

He added, “As the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, I hereby declare a total lockdown of Igbajo with immediate effect, pending the restoration of order and harmonious coexistence in the community.”

The curfew directs the Army, Police, Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to ensure 24-hour monitoring of the town.

The governor warned all residents, both natives and non-natives, to adhere strictly to the curfew and maintain peace.

The unrest follows the death of Adegboyega Famodun, the former Osun APC chairman and 30th Owa of Igbajo, who was installed as monarch in 2022 and later removed by an executive order from Governor Adeleke. Famodun was reinstated by the Osun State High Court in January 2025, a decision that is currently under appeal.
