Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has formally pitched his political tent with the African Democratic Congress, the coalition-backed platform many anticipated he would embrace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku confirmed the development on Monday via his X account, where he shared a photo proudly displaying his ADC membership card, accompanied by the short message: “It’s official.”
His defection comes on the heels of his July exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party long troubled by deep-seated internal conflicts. The move also aligns with the unveiling of the ADC by opposition leaders as their collective vehicle for the upcoming 2027 presidential race—an announcement that came just two weeks before Atiku’s resignation.
Why Atiku Left the PDP
Shortly after his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, disclosed his departure from the PDP, Atiku laid out the reasons behind his decision in a letter dated July 16.
Addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, the former Vice President pointed to widening disagreements and a drift from the party’s original ideals.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he stated.
He extended his best wishes to the party leadership, expressing appreciation for the roles and support he enjoyed during his years within the PDP.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he concluded.
