PREVIEW: S’Eagles face Gabon in W’Cup playoff – team news, possible lineups

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to clash with Gabon in the 2025 FIFA World Cup qualification playoff semi-final on Thursday at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The winner will move one step closer to the Intercontinental playoffs, facing either Cameroon or DR Congo for a shot at securing a World Cup ticket.

Road to the Playoffs

Nigeria gained a late boost in their qualification campaign after FIFA deducted three points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player.

Despite this, the Bafana Bafana maintained top spot with a final-round victory over Rwanda, leaving Nigeria to secure a playoff spot as one of the four best second-placed teams.

The three-time African champions ended their campaign with a dominant 4-0 victory over Benin, finishing with 17 points from 10 games.

They recorded four wins, five draws, and a single defeat, highlighting a campaign marked by flashes of brilliance but ongoing inconsistency.

Having missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, another failure would mark the first time Nigeria has missed consecutive tournaments since their 1994 debut in the United States.

Still, optimism surrounds the squad, as the Super Eagles remain unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions, winning their previous two and entering the playoff with momentum.

Gabon’s Challenge

Gabon secured their playoff berth as runners-up in Group F, finishing just one point behind Ivory Coast.

The Panthers accumulated 25 points from 10 matches, winning eight, drawing one, and losing just once, scoring 22 goals while conceding nine.

Under Coach Thierry Mouyouma, Gabon has remained unbeaten in their last seven matches since a 5-1 loss to Morocco during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

With a blend of defensive solidity, experienced leaders, and emerging talent, Gabon represents a formidable test for the Super Eagles.

Historically, Nigeria holds the edge in this fixture, winning five of the nine previous encounters, while Gabon have only beaten the Super Eagles once.

Their last meeting in 2005 ended in a 2-0 victory for Nigeria. FIFA rankings also favour Nigeria, currently 41st globally compared to Gabon’s 77th.

Team News

Nigeria enters the clash with a near full-strength squad. Star striker Victor Osimhen, fresh off a Champions League hat-trick for Galatasaray, leads the attack.

Ademola Lookman returns from suspension, likely partnering Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze upfront.

Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are expected to dominate midfield duties, while Semi Ajayi may be rested due to a yellow card in the previous match. Veteran defender Ola Aina remains sidelined recovering from surgery.

Gabon will rely heavily on veteran forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored all four goals in their thrilling 4-3 victory over Gambia in October.

He will be supported by Denis Bouanga. Coach Mouyouma has made only one new inclusion, Jonathan do Marcolino, while several key players remain sidelined through injury, including Jim Allevinah, Shavy Babicka, Medwin Biteghe, Michel Mboula, and Junior Noubi Fotso.

Predicted Lineups

Nigeria (possible): Nwabali; Frederick, Ekong, Bassey, Onyemaechi; Chukwueze, Ndidi, Iwobi, Simon; Osimhen, Lookman

Gabon (possible): Mbaba; Onfia, M’bemba, Manga; Lemina, Kanga, Ndong, Averlant; Obiang, Bouanga, Aubameyang

While Gabon’s recent form and attacking talent make them a dangerous opponent, Nigeria’s depth, star power, and attacking quality could prove decisive.
