PDP shifts screening of aspirants for national convention

PDP
Security beefed up ahead Edo PDP primary election

The Peoples Democratic Party has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier slated for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, who cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the postponement.

According to Fintiri, the committee will announce a new date soon and has urged aspirants and party members to remain calm and await further communication.

“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement,” the statement read.

“All aspirants and members of our great party should take note of this development and be guided accordingly,” Fintiri added.

The Adamawa governor reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and hitch-free convention, emphasizing that due process remains central to the PDP’s internal democracy.

The postponement comes just hours after former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, declared his intention to contest for the position of national chairman, intensifying the political atmosphere within the party.

Lamido’s announcement followed reports that some northern PDP stakeholders had earlier endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as their consensus candidate — an endorsement that has sparked resistance from other factions within the party.

Sources within the PDP said the disagreement among key blocs, including those aligned with Lamido and former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, may have contributed to the delay in the screening exercise.

PDP had earlier announced a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee, chaired by legal luminary Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), to vet aspirants ahead of the convention scheduled to hold November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Party insiders say the leadership hopes to use the extra time to resolve internal disputes and ensure unity before the convention.

“The party is taking steps to address emerging concerns. It is better to delay for peace than to rush into a divided convention,” a senior PDP source told The Punch.

The new screening date is expected to be announced in the coming days.
