NiMet predicts three-day dust haze, rainfall, flood risk

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted varying weather conditions — including dust haze, sunshine, and rainfall — across several parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday.

In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet advised Nigerians to prepare for changing atmospheric conditions and possible flooding, particularly in southern states.

According to the forecast, slight dust haze with good visibility is expected over parts of Borno, Zamfara, northern Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States on Monday.

The agency added that isolated thunderstorms and light rain may occur in Taraba and Adamawa States during the afternoon and evening hours.

It noted that residents of the central region should expect sunny skies with patches of clouds, with light rain or isolated thunderstorms anticipated later in the day over Abuja, Nasarawa, and Kogi States.

“Cloudy conditions are expected in the southern region on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States,” NiMet stated.

“Later in the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated in Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States,” the statement added.

For Tuesday, NiMet projected continued slight dust haze over the northern states, while Taraba and Adamawa may experience isolated thunderstorms and light rain throughout the day.

The central region will likely see sunny skies with intermittent clouds, alongside early morning thunderstorms in Benue and moderate rain across FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi States later in the day.

The agency also forecast cloudy skies across the southern states, with moderate rainfall over Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom in the morning, expected to intensify later in the day.

On Wednesday, NiMet anticipates sunny skies over the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain likely in Taraba State.

The central region will remain largely sunny with cloud patches, while Kogi and Abuja may experience isolated thunderstorms.

The southern part of the country is expected to have cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.

The agency further warned of possible flash floods in parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States, urging local authorities to activate emergency response measures.

“We reiterate the risk of flash flooding and advise motorists to exercise caution when driving in the rain,” NiMet cautioned.

“Authorities in vulnerable areas should implement flood response measures immediately.”

NiMet also advised individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions to limit outdoor activities due to the presence of dust particles in the northern atmosphere.

Additionally, airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight planning, while the public was encouraged to stay informed through NiMet’s website and official communication channels.
