Sanwo-Olu unveils LASU library

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, inaugurated the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at the Lagos State University, Ojo, a facility described as the largest university library in West Africa.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the new complex boasts state-of-the-art facilities, reflecting the state’s commitment to advancing education and research.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu said the project symbolised Lagos State’s dedication to education, knowledge, and innovation.

He noted that the library was more than just a building, describing it as “a living testament to the transformative power of learning and the dreams of generations to come.”

“This moment is deeply personal for me, not because it bears my name but because it embodies the ideals that have shaped my journey.

“Education remains the bridge between potential and purpose, the most enduring legacy any generation can bequeath to the next,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the new library features digital research tools, innovation hubs, reading lounges, and extensive archives, adding that it represents a fusion of traditional scholarship and digital advancement.

“The facility stands as a reflection of our THEMES Plus agenda, which prioritises education and technology as twin engines of development,” he stated.

He praised LASU’s evolution into a “citadel of excellence and a beacon of progress,” saying, “It stands today as the best state university in Nigeria and the most sought-after in the entire Black nation.”

The governor also acknowledged the efforts of his predecessors, including Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Akinwunmi Ambode, in contributing to LASU’s development.

He noted that his administration had invested heavily in completing the library and other educational infrastructure across Lagos.

“We see this not just as an infrastructure masterpiece but as part of our ongoing investment in minds.

“Lagos will never stop investing in education because it is the educated mind that creates inventions, heals wounds, and redefines tomorrow,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his consistent support for human capital development and education initiatives nationwide.

He reiterated his administration’s vision of making Lagos a “learning ecosystem” where education serves as “the passport to prosperity.”

“To have this library bear my name is not a monument to self, but a symbol of service.

“Leadership is not about leaving names on walls but about leaving an impact in people’s lives,” he said.

The governor called on LASU students and staff to take full ownership of the library, protect it, and use it as a hub for creativity and innovation.

“This library will be a space of discovery, dialogue, and dreaming where the next Nobel laureate, great author, visionary leader, or even future president will begin their journey,” Sanwo-Olu declared.

Citing late literary icon Chinua Achebe, he advised students to maintain integrity, saying, “One of the toughest tests of integrity is a blunt refusal to be compromised.”

“Let this complex inspire generations to come to think deeper, act better, and serve selflessly. While the building may age, knowledge and innovation will endure,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the ongoing faculty complex and other development projects at LASU, pledging continued investment in education across the state.

He then formally opened the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex as “a territory of learning, a beacon of innovation, and a gift to prosperity.”

Also present at the inauguration, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, commended the Lagos State Government for consistently prioritising education in its developmental agenda.
