Islamic calendar: Sultanate urges Muslims to watch for new moon

The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the new moon of Jumadal Ula 1447 AH on the evening of Tuesday, October 21, 2025, corresponding to the 29th day of Rabi’ul Thani in the Islamic calendar.

This was made known in an official statement issued on Monday by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

“Muslims are enjoined to begin the search for the new moon on Tuesday evening and report any sighting to the nearest district or village head,” the statement read.

Professor Junaidu emphasized that any confirmed sighting should be immediately reported to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

“Such reports should be communicated to His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, through appropriate traditional and religious channels,” the statement added.

The sighting of the new moon signals the beginning of a new Islamic lunar month, which is central to determining dates for religious observances, including fasting, prayers, and festivals.

Professor Junaidu concluded by praying for divine support in fulfilling this spiritual responsibility.

“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty, Ameen,” he prayed.
