Sultan urges Muslims to search for new Islamic month’s moon

The Sultanate Council, Sokoto State Chapter, has urged Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the crescent moon marking the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 12, and signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

According to the council, Thursday will be the 29th day of Safar 1448 AH, making it the appropriate day for Muslims to search for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal.

“This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Thursday 13th August, 2026, which is equivalent to 29th day of Safar 1448AH shall be the day to look for the new moon of Rabiul Awwal 1448AH,” the statement said.

The council encouraged Muslims who sight the crescent to promptly report it through the appropriate traditional authorities for onward transmission to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

“Muslims are therefore requested to start looking for the new moon of Rabiul Awwal 1448AH on Thursday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),” it stated.

Rabi’ul Awwal is the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds particular significance for Muslims.

The council also prayed for divine assistance as Muslims undertake the religious responsibility.
