Putin defends Russia’s oil output amid Western sanctions

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has asserted that Russia remains one of the world’s leading oil producers, despite facing what he described as “unfair” anti-competitive tactics aimed against the country.

Addressing a Russian energy conference in Moscow on Thursday, Putin criticised European nations for damaging their own economies by halting imports of Russian gas.

He also condemned Western export restrictions on equipment supplied to Russia.

Notably, the president made no reference to US efforts to persuade China and India to cease purchasing Russian energy.

“Russia maintains its position as one of the leading oil producers, despite the use of unfair competition mechanisms against us,” Putin said.

“We account for approximately 10 percent of global production and expect that by the end of the year, our country will have produced 510 million tonnes of oil,” he added.
