Academic activities have come to a halt at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, as lecturers joined the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities national leadership.
In contrast, the newly established Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, continues normal operations since it does not yet have a functioning ASUU chapter.
During visits to both FUT Minna and IBBU Lapai, lecture halls and classrooms were found empty, with students gathered in small groups discussing the situation.
At FUT Minna, many students had completed their examinations the previous week and returned home before the strike began.
However, some who were still writing exams were caught off guard, seen loitering around the Bosso and Gidan Kwano campuses in frustration.
Confirming the development, the ASUU Chairman of FUT Minna, Professor Lukeman Iyewobi, said the university had fully complied with the national directive of the union.
“We are on strike here at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, in accordance with the directive of the national body,” Iyewobi said. “There is no rival union or faction of ASUU in FUT Minna, we are united and all belong to ASUU.”
Likewise, the ASUU Chairman of IBBU Lapai, Dr. Galadima Bala, affirmed that lecturers at the institution had joined the strike in solidarity with the union’s national action.
“The union leaders are fighting for our rights, and we will all benefit from it when our demands are eventually met,” Bala stated.
The two-week warning strike, declared by ASUU’s national leadership, seeks to compel the Federal Government to honor past agreements, which include improved university funding, payment of earned academic allowances, and better working conditions for lecturers.
As of the time of filing this report, academic activities remained uninterrupted at Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, pending the establishment of its ASUU branch.
