UI shuts down as ASUU begins two-week nationwide warning strike

Academic activities at the University of Ibadan were on Monday, October 13, brought to a standstill as the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities joined the union’s two-week nationwide warning strike.

Checks across the campus revealed that lecture halls and administrative offices were locked, while the usually busy university environment appeared deserted. Students, who had earlier been notified of the planned strike, stayed indoors as movement within the campus reduced drastically.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, said the industrial action commenced at midnight on Sunday following directives from the union’s national secretariat.

“There is full compliance with the directive from our national body. The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” Afolabi stated.

He added that a monitoring team had been deployed across faculties and departments to ensure full adherence to the strike directive.

“Our monitoring team is moving round to ensure there’s total compliance. No academic or related activity is taking place on the campus at the moment,” he said.

The national body of ASUU had on Sunday declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in the country over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to meet its demands.

ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the action during a press conference held at the University of Abuja.

“It goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on September 28, 2025,” Piwuna said.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” he added.

The strike, according to ASUU, is to compel the government to address unresolved issues, including university funding, academic allowances, and the implementation of previous agreements.
