Army probes officer’s death after fire incident in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Army says it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its officers, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who died from burns sustained in a fire incident in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The officer was said to have been involved in a fire outbreak at his residence on September 22, 2025, and was later taken to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he reportedly received intensive medical treatment before his death on October 6, 2025.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Friday, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Captain Lawal Muhammad, said the investigation commenced immediately after the incident to establish what transpired.

According to Muhammad, “An investigation was instituted at the onset of the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding it before the demise of the officer. The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion.”

Despite concerted efforts by the medical team to stabilise his condition, the officer sadly passed away on October 6, 2025, while receiving care,” he said.
