The Federation of International Football Association has boosted Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after sanctioning South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana.
FIFA deducted three points from South Africa for fielding a suspended player in their World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho. The punishment reduces the Group C leaders’ total points to 14.
As part of the ruling, Lesotho was awarded a 3-0 victory and three points, a major setback to South Africa’s hopes of booking a place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
Following the decision, the Super Eagles now trail on 11 points, with both Benin Republic and South Africa sitting on 14 points each.
To stand a chance of qualification, Nigeria must win their remaining two fixtures against the Squirrels of Benin and the Crocodiles of Lesotho, while hoping Bafana Bafana drop points in their final matches.
