Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, governors elected on the party’s platform have renewed their commitment to internal democracy and unity, pledging to ensure a transparent and credible exercise.
Speaking during the meeting of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee, Protocol Sub-Committee in Abuja on Monday, the Chairman of the Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, assured that the party was fully prepared to deliver a successful convention.
Fintiri, who was joined by the Chairman of the Protocol Sub-Committee and Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, said every necessary arrangement was being put in place to strengthen the PDP’s internal cohesion and restore public confidence in the party.
“We are fully committed and will not leave any stone unturned,” Fintiri said. “We are putting in our best and making sacrifices for us to have a successful convention. Apart from my faith, the PDP is the most important association in my life because it has given me everything I have achieved. Under our leadership, we will not let this party down.”
He noted that the upcoming convention would produce a new set of competent and credible leaders for the National Working Committee.
“At the end of the day, the calibre of men and women we will elect will show that the PDP is still alive,” he said.
“Anyone who meets the requirements will be cleared to contest. Go to the field and test your popularity because we are finalising the list of delegates.”
Fintiri also assured that the delegates’ list would be made public, emphasizing that the process would be open and transparent.
“It’s not a closed system; it’s true democracy. If you are popular, go and test your strength. People are beginning to trust the party again, and with the right leadership, we will keep the PDP strong,” he added.
On his part, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed optimism that the high turnout at the meeting reflected the party’s renewed vigour and readiness for the convention.
“Today’s meeting shows that the PDP is alive and serious about the forthcoming convention,” he said. “We owe it to the founding fathers to ensure that the party remains strong. Our duty as the Protocol Sub-Committee is crucial because a well-organised convention begins with proper planning and coordination.”
He added that the sub-committee members would arrive in Ibadan ahead of other delegates to ensure smooth logistics and seamless coordination.
The PDP had earlier, at its 101st National Executive Committee, meeting on July 24, resolved to restructure and reposition the party through a national elective convention where 19 new members of the NWC will be elected.
