Serie A: Pulisic misses penalty as Milan, Juventus play goalless draw

Christian Pulisic missed a crucial penalty as AC Milan and Juventus played to a 0-0 stalemate at the Allianz Stadium.

The American winger had a golden chance early in the second half but sent his spot-kick soaring over the crossbar, leaving Milan and their fans frustrated.

Massimiliano Allegri returned to Juventus for the first time since his dismissal last May, aiming to steer his current side back to the summit of Serie A.

However, the draw leaves Juventus two points behind leaders Napoli and Roma, with Milan just a point further back.

The first half was largely cagey, offering only sporadic glimpses of goal. The closest came just before halftime when Strahinja Pavlovic’s cross found Santiago Gimenez, whose flicked header narrowly missed.

Milan keeper Mike Maignan had little to do in the opening 45 minutes but made a stunning save three minutes into the second half, keeping out Federico Gatti’s close-range volley.

Five minutes later, Milan seemed poised to take the lead when a penalty was awarded after Luka Modric’s over-the-top ball led to Gimenez going down under Lloyd Kelly’s challenge.

Pulisic, however, failed to capitalize, sending the spot-kick over. He tried to redeem himself immediately with a long-range effort, which was comfortably stopped by Michele Di Gregorio.

This marked only the second time Pulisic has missed a penalty in his professional career, the first being against Torino last February, when Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved his attempt.

Allegri brought on Rafael Leão, who immediately tested Di Gregorio with an audacious effort from inside his own half before squandering a better chance at the back post, set up by Pulisic.

In stoppage time, Leão had another golden opportunity following a Modric pass, but Di Gregorio blocked his scuffed attempt, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s follow-up was also denied.
