British singer Morrissey cancels US shows after death threat in Canada

British singer, Morrissey, has called off two scheduled concerts in the United States after a death threat was made against him ahead of a recent performance in Ottawa, Canada.

Authorities confirmed that a 26-year-old man from Ottawa was arrested and later granted bail for allegedly threatening to kill the artist, whose full name is Steven Morrissey, before his festival appearance last week.

Despite the incident, the Ottawa show went ahead without disruption.

However, the musician later decided to cancel appearances in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He pulled out of Friday’s performance in Connecticut and another in Boston.

Morrissey first rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the rock band The Smiths before launching a solo career in 1987.

He has remained a polarizing figure, often making headlines for his outspoken views on politics and animal rights.

In 2006, he notably refused to tour in Canada in opposition to the country’s annual seal hunt.

Announcing the Boston cancellation, the MGM Music Hall at Fenway shared a statement on Instagram, explaining, “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and the band, tomorrow’s engagement has been canceled.”
