The Bauchi State Police Command has sealed a pharmacy in the Yelwa area of Bauchi metropolis after a teenage girl suffered serious injuries from treatment administered by an alleged fake pharmacist.
Police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday.
He said the move followed a petition from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management against the operator of Hamdala Special Medicine Store.
According to Wakil, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Ibrahim Hassan Mamman, allegedly gave a 15-year-old girl, Maryam Magaji, an injection for malaria which caused severe complications.
“The petition indicated that Ibrahim, popularly called Degree, runs a pharmaceutical store in Yelwa. A 15-year-old female patient was brought in for treatment and was given an injection for malaria. Unfortunately, this led to significant bodily harm.
She was later taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed the injuries were directly linked to the injection,” Wakil explained.
The suspect, he said, was arrested and confessed during interrogation. “He narrated that on July 1, 2025, the victim’s brother brought her for malaria and typhoid treatment. Although he initially prescribed tablets, the brother insisted on injections.
He then administered an 80mg intramuscular injection for three days. Two weeks later, her condition deteriorated, and she was admitted to Bayara Hospital,” the police spokesman said.
Preliminary findings revealed that Mamman is neither a licensed pharmacist nor a qualified doctor. Expired drugs were also recovered from the shop, including bottles of Tuxil suspension manufactured by Fidson Healthcare Plc and Tuyil Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the proliferation of unlicensed medicine vendors in Bauchi.
In a related case, the police also confirmed the arrest of a woman, Zuwaira Hassan, for allegedly torturing her 10-year-old stepdaughter in Toro Local Government Area.
She was accused of inserting a hot metal spoon into the child’s private parts after branding her a witch.
“Detectives rescued the girl and rushed her to hospital. The suspect and a native doctor, Fatima Abdullahi, who allegedly instigated the act, were both arrested,” Wakil said.
He added that Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had ordered the transfer of both cases to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“The command will ensure justice is served in both cases to protect the rights of these innocent victims,” Wakil assured.
