Former Super Eagles captain, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has opened up about the struggles Nigeria’s Dream Team faced behind the scenes during their historic gold medal run at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
While fans remember the celebrations and the glory of being the first African football team to win Olympic gold, Okocha insists that the journey to the podium was far from smooth.
“We were the first team in Africa to win Olympic gold, and that achievement is very special to me,” Okocha recalled. “But people only see the final result. They don’t see the process, the sacrifices, and the challenges we had to overcome.”
Okocha revealed that even basic logistics, like transport and accommodation, were a constant struggle for the squad.
“We were in camp in the United States, preparing for our matches, when one morning we woke up and realized our training bus had disappeared. The Nigerian FA hadn’t paid for it. Can you imagine?” he said.
The team was left scrambling for a solution, showing remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
The hardship extended to their meals as well. “For nearly a week, players were served the same menu at their hotel, a situation that would test any athlete’s patience. “
We went to the hotel management and asked why the menu hadn’t changed. They told us we should be grateful just to have a place to stay because the FA hadn’t settled the bill for our accommodation.
“We went to them and asked how come you didn’t change our menu. They said we should be glad we are still here because the FA had not pay for our accommodations,” Okocha explained.
In response to the lack of support, a few team members personally stepped up, using their own cards to pay for lodging and renting mini-vans to continue training effectively.
“Few of us had to bring our cards and pay for our accommodation and then went and rented mini-vans to stay in camp, Okocha said. “It was tough, but it showed the kind of desire and determination we had as a team.”
Looking back, Okocha sees those struggles as part of what made the Atlanta Olympics triumph so meaningful.
