Super Eagles icon, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has disclosed that Bayern Munich attempted to sign him in 1991, but the proposed move collapsed because he was not yet eligible for a professional contract.
Okocha, regarded as one of Nigeria’s most gifted footballers, made the revelation during an appearance on the ObiOne Podcast, reflecting on a career that included spells with Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Hull City.
The former midfielder said Bayern became interested in him after he featured for the German club’s youth side at a tournament in Switzerland.
”I got an offer from Bayern Munich. I went with their youth team to a tournament in Switzerland, and after that, they wanted to sign me,” Okocha said.
However, his age became a major obstacle.
Okocha explained that he turned 18 in August, while German regulations at the time required players to have reached that age before July to be eligible for professional football during that season.
”Because I turned 18 in August, German rules stated that you had to turn 18 before July to play professionally that season. Because of that, I wasn’t even allowed to play in the promotion playoffs for the third division team I was playing for—even though we won our regional league and were aiming for the professional second division.
The Bayern proposal was only verbal, leaving Okocha concerned about committing his future without a formal agreement.
”Bayern made me an offer, but it was only verbal because they said, ‘Oh, we can’t give you a professional contract until you turn 18.’ Since I turned 18 late in the year, I would have had to wait almost another year. I would have had to train with the professionals and play with the reserve team, but I was willing to take the risk because they were the biggest club in Germany.
Okocha said he subsequently asked Bayern to put the agreement in writing, but the club declined.
”I asked them, ‘Can you put it in writing on paper? Because I can’t come all the way from Nigeria to rely on a verbal contract. What if I get injured and you tell me to go home? I’ll have nothing.’ They replied, ‘Well, if you don’t accept it, we’re sorry.’
With no formal deal in place, Okocha returned to Nigeria and eventually signed for third-division side Borussia Neunkirchen.
”So I went back and signed with a third-division club, Borussia Neunkirchen, to start the season. By the winter transfer window, Frankfurt came in for me; they understood the structural situation and offered me a one-year amateur contract followed by a two-year professional contract.”
That decision ultimately paved the way for Okocha’s move to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he established himself in the Bundesliga.
He spent five years with the German club before moving to Fenerbahçe.
During his Bundesliga career, Okocha made 90 appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing 13 assists.
Although he never joined Bayern, the revelation highlights how close the Nigerian star came to beginning his European career at one of Germany’s biggest clubs.
