Amusan matches Okagbare, Brume’s World Championship record

Tobi Amusan has matched the World Championship achievements of fellow Nigerians Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume by securing a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at this year’s Tokyo tournament on Monday, according to Making of Champions.

The world record holder demonstrated her class early, effortlessly advancing through the heats before turning up the intensity in the semifinals.

She executed a perfectly tactical run, clocking 12.36 seconds, the fastest time in the semis.

Amusan led a competitive lineup that included Grace Stark (12.37s), Olympic champion Masai Russell (12.42s), defending world champion Danielle Williams (12.44s), and rising star Ditaji Kambundji (12.44s).

Medal hopefuls Ackera Nugent and Alaysha Johnson, however, were unable to make it through to the final.

In the final, Amusan had a sluggish start, with Russell and Stark gaining early ground, Stark’s explosive reaction putting her slightly ahead.

But as the race progressed, Amusan and Kambundji mounted a strong comeback. Russell, the reigning Olympic champion, faded in the closing stages, while Amusan powered through with a well-timed dip at the finish to clinch silver, her first global medal since her 2022 World Championship victory and record-breaking performance. The result also marked Nigeria’s first podium finish of the championships.

Kambundji delivered a career-defining performance, storming to gold with a Swiss National Record of 12.24 seconds.

Stark secured bronze in 12.34s, while Russell ended fourth in 12.44s. Pia Skrzyszowska (12.49s) edged Devynne Charlton (12.49s) for fifth place. Williams finished seventh in 12.53s, with Nadine Visser rounding out the final in 12.56s.

With this silver, Amusan joins Okagbare and Brume as the only Nigerians to have claimed multiple medals at the World Championships, further cementing her status among the nation’s all-time athletics greats.
