The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reportedly arrested and detained former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion.
According to Vanguard, Senator Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto South under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, was detained after arriving at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday. The former Speaker of the House of Representatives is currently being quizzed by the anti-graft agency in Abuja.
It was gathered that the alleged cash withdrawals were in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Senator Tambuwal, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015, was the governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023 before being elected to the Senate.
