Super Eagles’ Tella backs Alonso to succeed at Real Madrid

Super Eagles winger, Nathan Tella, has expressed confidence in Xabi Alonso’s ability to thrive at Real Madrid, despite the Spaniard’s recent setback at the Club World Cup, where his Bayer Leverkusen side suffered a 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

Speaking in an interview with Flashscore, Tella praised Alonso’s managerial qualities, stressing that his former boss is well-equipped for success at the Spanish powerhouse.

“Obviously, Alonso is a brilliant manager, there’s no surprise. To have him as our manager, he was able to bring a different side to the game,” said the Nigerian international.

“I was able to see the game from a different point of view. He’s arguably been the best manager in the past two years.

“I wouldn’t say that he’s going to struggle. If anything, I think he’ll get even better than how he was with us.”

Alonso’s coaching journey began at Real Madrid’s youth setup, where he managed the Infantil A side during the 2018–2019 season, clinching both the league title and the Champions Tournament.

His growth continued at Real Sociedad B, where he honed his craft before stepping into the senior spotlight with Bayer Leverkusen.

In Germany, Alonso masterminded a historic 2023–24 campaign, guiding Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title, the club’s first ever, while also lifting the German Cup and Super Cup.
