Portugal beat Spain on penalties to win Nations League title

Portugal emerged champions of the 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League after edging out defending champions Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday night.

The thrilling final, which ended 2-2 after regulation and extra-time, saw Portugal prevail 5-3 on penalties to claim their second Nations League crown.

Spain struck first in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi, who capitalised on Portugal’s failure to clear a cross inside the box by smashing the ball home.

However, Portugal responded swiftly. Just five minutes later, Nuno Mendes pulled them level with a powerful low strike that beat Unai Simón in goal.

Though the goal was subjected to a VAR check for offside in the build-up, it was eventually allowed to stand.

As the first half drew to a close, Spain regained the lead. Pedri unlocked the Portuguese defence with a sublime pass to Mikel Oyarzabal, who coolly finished past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

Portugal’s equaliser came in the 61st minute courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran forward reacted sharply to a deflected cross from Mendes, poking the ball beyond Simón to bring the match level once more.

With just two minutes remaining, Ronaldo was forced off due to injury and replaced by Gonçalo Ramos.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time, and the contest went to penalties. Portugal kept their composure to convert all five of their spot-kicks, while Spain faltered when Álvaro Morata missed their fourth effort.

In the third-place playoff, France secured a 2-0 win over Germany, thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise.
