The Rivers State Government has expressed shock over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while allowing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom many have accused of fueling the state’s political crisis, to remain in office.
In a statement on Tuesday, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, described the development as unjust, arguing that Fubara has remained committed to constitutional order, peace, and good governance despite the ongoing political turbulence.
Johnson stated that since assuming office, Fubara has prioritised the protection of lives and property while ensuring Rivers State’s continued progress. Even amid political instability, he maintained his constitutional responsibilities, placing the interests of the people above personal or political ambitions.
The commissioner recalled that after President Tinubu’s intervention to resolve the crisis, the Rivers State Government implemented the agreed terms in good faith, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned. Additionally, the government promptly complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling as soon as it received the certified true copy of the judgment, demonstrating its commitment to upholding legal and democratic principles.
However, despite these efforts, Johnson lamented that lawmakers loyal to Wike, the former governor of the state, have continued to frustrate peace and stability. He expressed dismay that while Fubara was removed, Wike, whom he described as the principal actor in the crisis, remained untouched.
“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson stated.
Reassuring Rivers residents, the commissioner emphasized that governance remains effective despite the political challenges. He noted that salaries have been paid, developmental projects are ongoing, and the state remains secure.
At this critical time, the government urged citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding while reaffirming its commitment to engaging with all relevant institutions to uphold democracy and ensure Rivers State’s continued stability.
“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson added.
The Rivers State Government maintained that it would continue prioritising the well-being and prosperity of its citizens as it navigates the unfolding political crisis.
