70 Gombe youths renounce thuggery

No fewer than 70 repentant political thugs in Gombe State have laid down their weapons and pledged to shun violence as part of a renewed campaign for peace and youth development in the state.

The development followed a high-level town hall meeting organised by Youth O’Clock Nigeria, Gombe Chapter, in commemoration of International Youth Week.

The session, held at the Council Chamber of Gombe Local Government, drew the participation of traditional rulers, religious leaders, women and youth groups, security agencies and civil society actors.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Col. Abdullahi Bello (retd.), hailed the courage of the youths who had decided to abandon their violent pasts, noting that the state government remained committed to rehabilitating them.

“We are proud of your decision. Remain disciplined, honest and drug-free. Acquire vocational skills that will secure your future and restore your families’ dignity,” he charged.

Chairman of Gombe Local Government and ALGON Chairman, Sani Haruna, assured the former thugs that the council would provide opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

“Be law-abiding citizens and refuse to be used by politicians for selfish interests,” he advised.

Also speaking, the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar III, represented by Dr Sani Jauro, expressed delight over the positive turnaround.

Similarly, representatives of the Commissioner of Police and the NSCDC Commandant applauded the peace-building initiative, urging that such engagements be held regularly to foster trust and collaboration.

State Coordinator of Youth O’Clock Nigeria, Comrade Abdulaziz Labaran, said the meeting was aimed at “supporting these youths who have chosen peace and are ready to contribute to Gombe’s development.”

Speaking on behalf of the repentant youths, Kabiru Yerima and Balkisu Salisu expressed remorse over their past actions, calling on stakeholders to assist them with empowerment programmes.
