In recognition of their heroic contribution to Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations seven Super Falcons players hailing from Imo State have each been rewarded with a ₦10 million cash gift by the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

The players, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Osinachi Ohale, Oluchi Oluehi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Anna Imo, and Michelle Alozie, were part of the Nigerian team that lifted the WAFCON trophy in Morocco, marking the nation’s 10th title in the competition.

Although Michelle Alozie, who is based in the United States, could not attend the reception, the remaining six players were warmly hosted at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Owerri.

National Glory, Local Pride

The Super Falcons pulled off a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the final, having initially fallen behind by two goals.

Their spirited performance captured the hearts of Nigerians and earned them accolades both at home and abroad.

The federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had earlier honored each member of the 24-player squad with ₦150 million, a fully furnished three, bedroom apartment, and the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum also pledged a collective donation of ₦360 million to the team.

Uzodimma Hails Daughters of Imo State

Speaking at the reception in Owerri, Governor Uzodimma praised the players for their strength, calmness, and patriotism during a crucial moment for the nation.

“The steeze and composure displayed by the Super Falcons were unmatched. Even in moments when the nation was filled with apprehension, they stood firm,” the governor remarked.

He went on to express personal pride in the daughters of Imo State who contributed significantly to the team’s success.

“Hosting the team at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge was a moment of profound joy. It is particularly moving to witness the outstanding contributions of Imo State daughters, whose talents and dedication were on full display,” he said.

Describing their effort as an inspiration, Uzodimma added that the players’ performance has “rekindled national pride”, underlining the value of dedication, discipline, and resilience.

The gesture by the Imo State government not only recognizes the players’ achievements but also highlights the state’s commitment to encouraging excellence in sports, especially among women.
