11 injured, suspect arrested after random stabbing in US

A quiet Saturday in Traverse City, Michigan, the United States, was shattered when a man armed with a folding knife launched a sudden stabbing spree inside a Walmart, injuring 11 people.

Authorities have described the attack as a “random” act of violence.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed during a press briefing that the 42-year-old Michigan resident suspected of carrying out the attack was swiftly apprehended.

“There is no information indicating there were additional suspects,” Shea said. “It appears that these were all random acts.”

The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken into custody within minutes of the initial emergency calls. He sustained no injuries during the arrest.

According to the sheriff, bystanders played a crucial role in subduing the assailant and providing aid to the victims before emergency personnel arrived.

“There was ‘citizen involvement’ in taking the suspect into custody,” Shea noted, adding that shoppers also assisted with “treatment of victims,” as acknowledged in a Facebook post by the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began near the store’s checkout area, involving what the sheriff described as a “standard folding knife-style weapon.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who resides in Traverse City with his husband, Chasten, and their children, also reacted to the tragedy.

“Along with the whole Traverse City community, Chasten and I are shaken by the awful and senseless violence at Walmart earlier today,” Buttigieg posted. “We’re thinking of everyone affected and hoping and praying for speedy recovery for all those who were injured.”

Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington condemned the attack, telling CNN, “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders. We’ll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation.”

Sheriff Shea urged the community to remain alert despite the rarity of such violence in the region.

“Violence is very uncommon for our area,” he said. “But unfortunately … no one is immune to this.”
