The Lagos State Police Command has announced the deployment of over 5,000 personnel across the state to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration.
The statement was issued on Tuesday evening by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, who noted that the deployment was carried out following the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, in line with instructions from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.
Adebisi explained that the security operation includes conventional police officers, tactical units, intelligence operatives, marine police, and special squads strategically positioned throughout Lagos State to guarantee public safety during the festive season.
“The operation is aimed at monitoring individuals or groups whose activities could threaten public peace, preventing criminal infiltration through the waterways and forestalling any breach of security during and after the celebrations,” she said.
She added, “Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of tactical units have been directed to intensify patrols, ensure visibility policing and maintain round-the-clock surveillance across all parts of Lagos State before, during and after the festivities.”
Adebisi also emphasized that officers on duty have been instructed to remain “professional, courteous and firm in the discharge of their responsibilities.”
To tackle the traffic congestion typically experienced during the festive rush, she stated that more than 5,000 personnel have been deployed to manage traffic on major highways, inner roads, and known traffic-prone areas across the state.
Highlighting efforts to reduce road accidents, Adebisi revealed that Jimoh recently held a strategic meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, alongside representatives of other security and safety agencies.
She said, “Participants at the meeting included representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal Controller of Works, among others.”
The meeting focused on implementing sustainable measures to enhance road safety and public security during the festive period.
Adebisi further disclosed that joint police teams, comprising conventional officers, tactical squads, smart operatives, and intelligence units, have been deployed across the state to crack down on traffic robbers, hoodlums, and other criminals attempting to exploit the celebrations.
She added that special attention is being given to safeguarding places of worship, recreational centres, nightclubs, markets, motor parks, and other public gathering points expected to experience heavy foot traffic.
Reassuring residents and visitors, the police spokesperson said the Command remains “unwavering in its commitment to the protection of lives and property throughout the festive season and beyond.”
She urged the public to remain law-abiding and vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious activities immediately at the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, and 08039344870.
