Yobe, IOM to boost IDP resettlement, allocate 5% budget for recovery

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of internally displaced persons by strengthening its collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration.

According to The PUNCH, the Chief of Mission for IOM Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche, in Damaturu, Governor Buni highlighted several initiatives aimed at ensuring dignified resettlement and reintegration of IDPs affected by insurgency in the state.

The governor revealed that his administration had implemented a dedicated policy on IDPs and allocated five percent of the state’s annual budget to support critical infrastructure, social services, and long-term recovery efforts.

“Our government has made deliberate investments in sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, roads, electricity, and water supply to ensure our people return to their communities with dignity,” Buni said.

“We no longer have any IDP camps in Yobe. All displaced persons have been successfully resettled, and today, Yobe is seen as a model in post-conflict recovery.”

He expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and reiterated that the government’s approach prioritizes dignity, integration, and sustainable development.

In her remarks, IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, Sharon Dimanche, lauded the governor’s commitment to rebuilding lives and fostering inclusive growth.

“It takes a leader with a compassionate heart to show this level of dedication to the resettlement of displaced persons,” Dimanche said.

“We are proud to partner with Yobe State in delivering durable solutions and transforming recovery into long-term stability.”
