WWCQ: Falconets edge Senegal 1-0 in first-leg

The Falconets faced a challenging outing at home against Senegal in the first leg of the World Cup qualifier this weekend, eking out a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Playing in a 4-3-3 formation, Nigeria posed threats down the flanks but struggled to find sufficient numbers inside the box to convert their chances.

It was substitute Kindness Ifeanyi who broke the deadlock, heading a corner into the back of the net just seconds after stepping onto the pitch in the 49th minute.

Before the breakthrough, the match was tense and measured, with Senegal exploiting the wings at times and delivering dangerous crosses into the Nigerian penalty area.

Upfront, towering forward Janet held up play admirably but was forced off due to injury, a blow for the hosts.

Nigeria’s play, however, showed cohesion and tactical discipline. Players like Shakirat Moshood, Ramota Kareem (before being substituted), and Kindness Ifeanyi impressed with incisive runs and sharp finishing, while midfield orchestrator Taiwo Afolabi pulled strings with elegant passes before her own exit.

The team displayed a clear pattern of play: dominating the flanks, delivering precise crosses, and using the attacking midfield to open up spaces.

Wingbacks pushed high, creating width, while the side maintained a strong structural identity throughout.

The return leg promises to be a tense battle, as Senegal proved they can exploit lapses in concentration. Nigeria will need to stay alert and disciplined to protect their slender advantage.

For now, congratulations to the Falconets on a determined first-leg win.
