World Cup: Yirenkyi fires Ghana to 1-0 win over Panama

Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Caleb Yirenkyi netting a stoppage-time winner to hand Carlos Queiroz’s side all three points in a thrilling Group L encounter.

The Black Stars struggled to find their rhythm for large parts of the contest and failed to register a shot on target until the closing stages of the first half.

Panama, guided by Thomas Christiansen, controlled much of the game and looked the more dangerous side, creating several promising opportunities.

Despite their dominance, Panama were unable to convert their chances and were left frustrated as Ghana improved significantly after the break.

Antoine Semenyo played a key role in Ghana’s resurgence, driving his team forward and spearheading several attacking moves.

Panama came close to breaking the deadlock through Cristian Martínez and Ismael Díaz late in the second half, but neither player could apply the finishing touch when it mattered most.

Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Ghana struck in injury time. Semenyo helped launch the decisive attack before Yirenkyi produced the winning finish, sparking celebrations among the Black Stars players and supporters.

The defeat extended Panama’s unwanted World Cup record, with the Central Americans now having lost all four matches they have played at the tournament.
