World Cup: Oyarzabal bags brace as Spain thrash Saudi 4-0

Mikel Oyarzabal delivered a Man-of-the-Match performance on Sunday as Spain cruised to a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, securing their first win of the World Cup in Atlanta.

After coming under criticism for his ineffective display in Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde, Oyarzabal responded emphatically by setting up the opening goal and scoring twice himself to inspire La Roja.

The Real Sociedad forward played a key role in Spain’s early breakthrough, sending in a low cross that teenage sensation Lamine Yamal converted at the far post after just 10 minutes.

The assist highlighted Oyarzabal’s vision and composure, while Yamal’s finish made him the eighth-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Oyarzabal then took centre stage. He doubled Spain’s lead in the 21st minute with a close-range finish before adding his second goal just three minutes later, effectively putting the contest beyond Saudi Arabia before halftime.

The 28-year-old’s influence was evident throughout the opening period as he constantly troubled the Saudi defence with his movement, link-up play and clinical finishing.

With Spain comfortably in control at the break, coach Luis de la Fuente withdrew both Oyarzabal and Yamal, preserving them for the challenges ahead.

Spain continued their dominance after the restart and added a fourth goal when Marc Cucurella’s effort deflected off Hassan Altambakti and into the net for an own goal.

The convincing victory put Spain firmly back on track after their disappointing opening draw and strengthened their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.

While Yamal’s historic goal attracted attention, it was Oyarzabal who stole the show, silencing his critics with a goal, two assists and a performance worthy of the Man-of-the-Match award.
