Brian Brobbey continued his impressive FIFA World Cup campaign with his third goal of the tournament as the Netherlands secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Tunisia on Thursday to finish top of Group F and advance to the knockout stage.
The Dutch entered their final group match level on points with Japan, but the Samurai Blue’s 1-1 draw against Sweden handed the Netherlands first place in the group.
The result sets up a Round of 32 clash with Morocco on Monday, while Japan face a difficult encounter against Brazil.
Already eliminated before kick-off, Tunisia endured another disappointing outing and suffered their third consecutive defeat of the tournament.
The Netherlands made a dream start when Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently turned Denzel Dumfries’ dangerous cross into his own net in the opening minutes.
The lead was doubled in the seventh minute. Virgil van Dijk rose highest to flick a free-kick across the penalty area, where Brobbey reacted quickest to guide the ball beyond goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen.
Tunisia briefly raised hopes of a comeback after the restart when Hazem Mastouri steered a corner kick into the net in the 54th minute to reduce the deficit.
However, the Dutch restored their two-goal cushion eight minutes later. Jan Paul van Hecke’s header from another corner took a decisive touch off Anis Slimane before ending up in the Tunisian net for a second own goal of the evening.
With rain intensifying throughout the second half, the Netherlands comfortably controlled proceedings and saw out the remainder of the match without difficulty.
The victory capped a strong recovery by the Dutch after opening their World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan.
Subsequent wins over Sweden and Tunisia ensured they progressed with momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
For Tunisia, the defeat extended a miserable run of form. The North Africans finished the tournament without a win after earlier heavy losses to Sweden and Japan, while ongoing struggles continued despite a mid-tournament coaching change that saw Herve Renard replace Sabri Lamouchi.
The Netherlands, three-time World Cup runners-up, will now look to continue their quest for a first-ever world title when they face Morocco in the next round.
