World Cup: Iran hold 10-man Belgium to goalless draw

Alireza Beiranvand produced a superb seven-save display as Iran and Belgium played out a 0-0 draw at the World Cup on Sunday, with Team Melli failing to take advantage after the Red Devils were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

Belgium were reduced to 10 when defender Nathan Ngoy was sent off in the 66th minute for a straight red card after a loose clearance led to him fouling Mehdi Taremi and denying a clear breakaway opportunity.

Despite the numerical advantage, Iran could not find a breakthrough, while Belgium still created the better chances in the closing stages.

Both sides ultimately settled for their second consecutive draw in Group play.

Iran will feel particularly frustrated after squandering a rare chance to defeat a European heavyweight ranked 10th in the world, especially in a match played in front of a lively crowd dominated by diaspora supporters.

Beiranvand once again stood out for Iran, while Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also delivered a strong performance to match him.

Iran’s best moment came early when Taremi finished a well-worked set piece, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after VAR intervention.

Belgium, meanwhile, continued their concerning lack of cutting edge in front of goal, extending their scoring drought at World Cup level despite dominating possession for long spells.

The match was also played against the backdrop of a disrupted Iranian campaign, with travel restrictions forcing constant logistical adjustments and limiting their time in the United States.

Coach Amir Ghalenoei opted for experience in his lineup, fielding one of the oldest starting XIs in World Cup history.

Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku from the start, though the striker managed just one shot in 73 minutes as he continues his return from injury. Winger Jérémy Doku was unavailable due to illness.

In the end, both teams left with a point, but neither will be satisfied after missing opportunities to take control of their group campaign.
